A Little Lithium Goes a Long Way

Amount of lithium in a 152 kg electric car battery pack?  Very roughly, about 4 kilograms.  That stuff is light, so a little mass goes a long way.  Just like when taking lithium salts for bipolar disorder.

Carbon Price Electricity Price Hike

I just worked out how much my electricity bills will go up as a result of the carbon tax.  About $1.20.  That's per year.  Oh my god!  Tony Abbott save me!

Do Ribosomes Have Souls?

I just watched a video on youtube about protein synthesis and it was terrible.  It portrayed messenger RNA, ribosomes, etc. as having volition.  They knew exactly where to go and just magically went where they were supposed to as if they were piloted by tiny little men.  (Tiny little women have better things to do with their time.)  And they were accompanied by Star Trek like sound effects as they went.  While some basic information was correct, overall it was as wrong as if they showed cars being constructed by workers throwing random components into a pile and then the car built itself by working out which parts fit best where.  (Now that I think about it, that would be a really cool way to make a car.)

Protein systhesis is not well organised, it is a clown show!  With all the clowns (clowns in this analogy represent cell crud) bouncing off each other and spinning away randomly until by chance tab A just happens to go in slot B and that is how babies are made.  No wait!  Wrong biology lesson!  It's a clown show until by chance complimentary charges on the right molecules line up.  Then they snap into place.  Sometimes.

Ray Bradbury Was Not a Hard Science Fiction Writer, But Apparently There is Someone Who Disagrees

Ray Bradbury has roundhouse kicked the cosmic bucket into the great unknown.  (Well, actually it's not that unknown.  He's just dead, Jim.)  So I think it's important to remember how he inspired many young people to expect to die in a nuclear war.  Oh wait, I mean, he inspired many young people to set fire to books.  No, that can't be right either.  He inspired many young people to read another Ray Bradbury story because he wrote some darn good stuff.  Yes, that's it!

Here is a musical tribute to the great author.

WARNING: Contains excellent words and jiggling.

There Ain't No Silver Lining On That Cloud, It's Nuclear Fallout

If someone put a thumb* to my head and said, "Which is better for the environment?  A nuclear plant or a coal plant without any form of carbon capture?"  I would say, "A nuclear plant would be much better, hands down.  Even all three hands down."  But even better would be neither.  This is because solar and wind and other forms of low emission electricity generation are much cheaper and we can use the money saved to either clean up the environment or just make ourselves richer.  Either of these options is good compared to neither.

* I hate it when people press their thumbs against my head.
